VERA KOMLIK

WHERE SILENCE SPEAKS:
THE TIMELESS WORLD OF A BELARUSIAN DESIGNER

When we met Vera Komlik in Novi Sad, Serbia, she appeared shy and softly spoken, her angelic features radiating a timeless innocence. Yet beneath that quiet exterior lay a force of rare intensity. Vera possesses a beauty that transcends appearance — one that emanates from depth, intellect, and spirit.

What we discovered was a focused and fiercely authentic personality: a designer who approaches fashion with introspection and purpose. Deeply proud of her Belarusian roots, Vera draws inspiration from the traditional costume of Western Polesia, transforming it into a contemporary language of form, texture, and symbolism. Each collection is concept-driven, carrying emotion and narrative rather than following trends. She designs with thought, not haste; with soul, not spectacle.

After her international debut at Serbia Fashion Week, we were eager to photograph her collection. Yet for me, the true face of her work was Vera herself. She embodied the essence of her vision — purity, restrained power, and quiet rebellion. In front of the camera, the seemingly timid young woman became a storyteller, guiding us deep into the heart of Belarusian heritage.

Vera’s creations stand out for their rational, waste-free cuts — a tribute to the resourceful craftsmanship of her ancestors. She replaces conventional tailoring with gathering, pleating, and sculptural fabric manipulation, transforming centuries-old techniques into modern statements. Her use of natural linen, revered in Belarusian culture as a sacred material, lends her pieces both structure and spirit: tactile poetry woven from tradition.

Rather than replicating folkloric motifs, Vera reimagines them through architectural lines and structural decoration, achieving harmony between modern minimalism and folk expressiveness. A palette of pure whites and soft neutrals heightens the sculptural clarity of her silhouettes, allowing form and craftsmanship to take centre stage.

Beneath her delicate calm lies a designer of conviction, intellect, and artistic courage. Vera Komlik is not merely preserving cultural memory — she is reawakening it, proving that true modernity is born from knowing one’s roots, and that the quietest voices often leave the most powerful echo.

I N T E R V I E W

QCEG: How did it feel to present your collection at Serbia Fashion Week, taking your work beyond Belarus?

Vera Komlik: I was delighted to present my work on such a prestigious international stage and to share the Belarusian national spirit. I am sincerely grateful to Mrs. Svetlana Horvat for inviting me and admire the professionalism behind this wonderful platform.

QCEG: Which designers or artists have inspired your journey?

Vera Komlik: I am inspired by innovators who convey personal stories through their creations. Designers such as Rei Kawakubo, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, and Martin Margiela have influenced me deeply. I also admire Pieter Brueghel the Elder and contemporary artists like Banksy.

QCEG: How would you describe your personal style and creative philosophy?

Vera Komlik: I create conceptual collections that tell stories. My designs reflect social and cultural impressions, transforming emotions inspired by books, films, or paintings into artistic silhouettes and materials. Clothing, for me, is both expression and dialogue.

QCEG: How do you bring Belarusian heritage into your work while keeping it modern?

Vera Komlik: My collection Thread of the Foundation reinterprets Western Polesie folk costumes through modern silhouettes, sculptural linen fabrics, and architectural decoration. Traditional techniques are given new artistic life within a contemporary aesthetic.

QCEG: Are there specific fabrics you love working with?

Vera Komlik: I choose natural materials with unique textures or prints that help tell a story. The fabric itself becomes part of the narrative.

QCEG: How do you see the future of fashion, both in Belarus and globally?

Vera Komlik: Fashion is moving away from monotony toward deeper cultural exploration. I believe the future lies in new ideas born from local heritage — perhaps Belarusian aesthetics will inspire an international trend.

QCEG: If there were no limits, what kind of collection would you create?

Vera Komlik: I dream of creating fashion as pure art. For now, these ideas remain in my notebooks, waiting to come alive.

QCEG: What emotions do you hope people feel wearing your designs?

Vera Komlik: I welcome any emotional reaction. I want people to feel fully themselves — clothing should complement personality, not disguise it.

QCEG: Are there collaborations or projects you dream of pursuing?

Vera Komlik: I hope to collaborate with painters and musicians. Belarusian artists Andrei Skitev and Valery Slavuk inspire me deeply, as does Naoki Urasawa for his exploration of human conflict.

QCEG: Looking back, what has been your most memorable moment as a designer?

Vera Komlik: Seeing the backstage of my first show at Fashion Mill 2019 in Minsk — the atmosphere was pure magic.

QCEG: How do you hope your work influences Belarusian fashion internationally?

Vera Komlik: I aim to turn the Belarusian national style into a recognizable brand, inspiring young designers to discover identity through heritage rather than trends.

QCEG: Do you see your collections as wearable fashion or storytelling?

Vera Komlik: I strive to merge conceptual depth with practicality — clothes that are meaningful, wearable, and adapted to modern life.

QCEG: What keeps your creativity alive, even when challenges arise?

Vera Komlik: My surroundings inspire me — culture, politics, and art fuel new interpretations. Challenges push growth, and I am grateful to dedicate my life to fashion.

QCEG: What’s next for you and your brand?

Vera Komlik: I am working on a new collection, less theatrical, while continuing to establish a distinct and recognizable brand identity.

“As we concluded our conversation, it
was clear that Vera’s journey
is only beginning — guided by quiet determination,
cultural pride, and a vision that speaks through silence.”
